Our Story
In 2023, -ish began as an acronym for our first design research project Imagining Student Housing.
​
We sprinkled in some word play and
-ish, as an adjective suffix, conveyed a sense of approximation, as in, "kinda", or "sorta", or "not really", and as in, design-ish, or research-ish.
​
-ish highlighted that we don't always have the language or systems to describe what's being imagined.
​
-ish quickly evolved beyond the acronym and grammatical tool.
​
-ish is an attitude, a mindset, and an ethos.
​
Living in the -ish means embracing ambiguity in the design process, nesting in the in-between space, and facing uncertainty with curiosity—allowing our minds to extend beyond the realm of the status quo, pressing against the barriers, and into the design realm of
radical imagination.
